Postpartum Month 2
It was 4:44am, he woke up and I fed him as usual. When putting him back in his bassinet, he started tossing and turning as if to wake up. “Oh no” I thought.. anticipating crying.
Then.. his eyes opened.
He looked at me… and smiled.
A beautiful, innocent, pure smile.
This is the magic of children— the love you are so gently granted with no explanation, by a life that you birthed. A smile while the rest of the world is asleep. A delicate secret shared between the two of us, witnessed only by the stars. A smile that made time stand still in the quiet night. A smile as if to say, “thank you for being here with me.”
I rewrapped his swaddle, and just like that, he fell peacefully asleep. Thank you, my beautiful son, for that smile you will not remember, and that I will never forget.
